THE 10 ESSENTIALS TO CARRY WITH YOU ON EVERY HIKE -
FROM REI - EXPERT ADVICE

1.
Navigation:  map, compass, altimeter, GPS device, personal locator beacon (PLB) or satellite messenger.  Carry a topo map and know how to read it.
2.  Headlamp:  plus extra batteries
3.  Sun Protection:  sun glasses,  sunscreen and sun-protection clothing year-round.
4.  First Aid:  including foot care such as moleskin and insect repellant.

5.  Knife:  plus a gear repair kit.
6.  Fire:  matches/lighter, tinder and/or stove.
7.  Shelter:  carried at all times - such as space blanket, emergency bivy.
8.  Extra Food:  Beyond the minimum expectation-bring enough food to share.  The average hiker should consume at least 200 calories/hour.  I bring calorie-dense foods such as dried fruit, sandwich, beef jerky, nuts, etc.
9.  Extra Water:  Beyond the minimum expectation - on very long hikes, I carry a light weight water pump in addition to 3 liters of water.  Moderate -long hikes - 2-3 liters of water, depending on outside temperature.
10.  Extra clothes:
Beyond the minimum expectation. - think layers, bring extra hat in winter, I always bring light gloves even in summer if up in high country.
