Parry's penstemon
Penstemon parryi
Thimble Peak Hike near Tucson
AKA Parry Beardtongue. "Penstemon" means five stamens. It is named after Charles Christopher Parry, one of the great plant collectors of the nineteenth century. He collected a large amount of plants from the U.S. and Mexico border region in the mid-1850's. These plants thrive in desert washes and are sometimes abundant on burned-over slopes in desert grassland, such as this plant photographed on the way to Thimble Peak near Sabino Canyon, Tucson, Arizona.
