FIT after 50
Brian Holgate, Master of Physical Therapy
- Stays fit riding his two Dual Sports bikes: Suzuki DR 650SE, set up for overnight trips and for more street/forest service roads, and a Suzuki DR-Z 400S, set up as a street legal dirt bike for more difficult trails.
- Despite having psoriatic arthritis, Brian continues to stay fit and has first-hand experience with joint pain to guide his patients' exercise regimens and great advice on how to protect joints.
- "I stay fit by hitting the gym at least 4 days a week and have for 33 years without more than 2 weeks off. These days I do 15-25 min of cardio to warm up the psoriatic arthritis joints. Then some stretching and a lot of warm up sets on weights. Warm up is critical with psoriatic arthritis. I can use significantly more weight without flaring the arthritis when well warmed up. I have partially torn two tendons and both occurred when lifting something (not weights) when not warmed up. I also don't lift heavy weights in the gym in an effort to protect my joints. For example my leg workouts often include squats with only 225 lbs but I do 3-4 sets of 20 reps."
- "I also cut my grass with a push mower (no self propelled mower for me) and try to hike Table rock trail from time to time."
