Christmas Cactus
Cylindropuntia leptocaulis
Cat Mountain - Tucson Mountain Park, Arizona
In December, the red fruits still cling to the branches; hence the name Christmas Cactus. The narrow stems of this cactus will entangle with adjacent plants and form impenetrable thickets, as was the case of this cactus, photo taken December 28, 2019. The red fruits were crushed and mixed with a beverage to produce narcotic effects.
