Lat/Long for Merriam Lake/Pass Lake trailhead at the end of West Fork of Pahsimeroi Road: 44.1292 N 113.7271 W.
- Trailhead sign located at end of West Fork Pahsimeroi Road at open area with campsite next to the West Fork Pahsimeroi River.
- The trail quickly crosses a creek with a log bridge. The trail forks soon and the trail to the right goes to Merriam Lake. Take the left trail toward Leatherman Pass and Pass Lake.
- Follow this trail through the forest with a small meadow where you will see Leatherman on the left of a saddle and White Cap Peak on the right. Continue on and at about 2.5 miles, a large valley opens. This is where you leave Leatherman Pass Trail (if you have gone too far to Leatherman Pass, you will see a sign for it and will have to backtrack).
- Leave Leatherman Pass Trail and take the large talus-filled gully to the left (east) of the prominent north ridge. A trail is visible from the meadow.
- You will cross the stream in the valley and climb the steep scree slope in order to get into the gulley which will be ~ 0.3 mile.
- We saw obvious trails - one of which climbs the steep wall of talus to the lowest point on the ridge between Leatherman Peak and Leatherman's Northeast Peak. We climbed to the right of that trail, where there were more fins and outcrops of solid rock.
- Once on the ridge, it is another 400-500-foot climb southwest to the summit at ~ 4.3 miles.
