This annual herb is in the mallow family and grows in desert bajadas and washes. This plant was found in a wash near Artist Palette Peak in Death Valley National Park. It grows in the Mojave and Sonoran deserts of southern Nevada, southeastern California, and western Arizona below 4,000 feet. This wildflower is also known as "lantern flower" because the glow it produces when light passes through its petals.
